Saba was amazing, different from what we expected. It’s a volcanic island jutting out of the Caribbean. From St. Martin we took a small turbo-prop and landed on a tiny strip shorter than an aircraft carrier.

The island is authentic with Dutch cottages and natives who have lived there for many generations. Because there are no beaches, the specialty is DIVING. The Sabans have protected their reefs and the results are amazing. Volcanic underwater pinnacles host healthy corals and abundant fish life. Frog fish and seahorses were our favorites.

Accommodations at Queens Garden were luxurious, a bit remote from the action on the funky Windward side of the island. But it’s all a cab ride away. All in all, truly an unspoiled Queen.

What’s the Adventure?

This was our destination for 2010 Turkey Day in the Tropics and the perfect way to have a fun week with friends. We spent the mornings diving, including some great pinnacles. In the afternoon there were miles of hiking trails and good birding. It was fun to explore around the island or just kick back. We loved our small, luxury boutique resort, Queens Garden Resort. It sits above the town of The Bottom at 1200 feet of elevation with views to match. All rooms look over the hillside to the sea as you sit in your private Jacuzzi by candlelight. Saba, being a volcanic island rising straight out of the sea, does not have a beach but the resort has a pool with views.  We offered a complimentary nitrox certification because you’ll definitely want to use it here and will be doing in depth multimedia talks on the marine life so you know exactly what to look for. Digital u/w photo instruction and shared DSLR use included! Ditto for digital video! And Saba is fantastic for underwater digital photography.
